Understanding the Grade Scale
Our grade scale makes it easy to understand how your percentage score translates into a letter grade and GPA. It covers common grades from A+ to F, along with the corresponding percentage ranges, GPA values, and performance descriptions. Whether you’re checking your exam results, estimating your GPA, or using our grade calculator to understand your academic performance, this grading scale provides a simple and reliable reference. Keep in mind that grading systems can vary between schools, colleges, and universities, so students should always check their institution’s official grading policy when exact requirements apply.

How to Calculate Your Grade
Formula:
Grade % = (Points Earned ÷ Total Points) × 100
Example:
You scored 45 on a test, 38 on a project, and 17 on a quiz. The total possible points were 50, 40, and 30.
- Add your points earned: 45 + 38 + 17 = 100
- Add the total possible points: 50 + 40 + 30 = 120
- Divide: 100 ÷ 120 = 0.833
- Multiply by 100: 0.833 × 100 = 83.3%
Your grade is 83.3%, which is a B.
Weighted Grade Example
Some teachers count each category differently. For example: Test = 50%, Project = 30%, Quiz = 20% of your final grade.
Formula:
Final Grade = (Test % × Test weight) + (Project % × Project weight) + (Quiz % × Quiz weight)
Step 1: Turn each score into a percentage
- Test: 45 ÷ 50 × 100 = 90%
- Project: 38 ÷ 40 × 100 = 95%
- Quiz: 17 ÷ 30 × 100 = 56.7%
Step 2: Multiply each percentage by its weight
- Test: 90 × 0.50 = 45
- Project: 95 × 0.30 = 28.5
- Quiz: 56.7 × 0.20 = 11.3
Step 3: Add them up
45 + 28.5 + 11.3 = 84.8%
Your weighted grade is 84.8%, which is a B.
Notice that this is higher than the 83.3% from the regular method. That’s because the quiz, your lowest score, counts for only 20% here, so it pulls your grade down less.
