How The Grade Calculator Works

The Grade Calculator makes it easy to calculate an overall grade without doing weighted-grade calculations manually. It can be used for homework, quizzes, tests, projects, exams, and other assessments that contribute to a course grade.

The calculator uses the grade and weight of each assessment to calculate a weighted average. This gives a more accurate result when different assignments have different levels of importance.

How to Use the Grade Calculator

Using the calculator is quick and straightforward.

1. Add your assessments

Enter the name of each assessment, such as Homework, Quiz, Midterm, Project, or Final Exam.

2. Enter your grade

Enter the grade as a percentage. For example, you can enter 85 for an 85% grade. You can also select a letter grade, and the calculator will convert it into a percentage.

3. Enter the assessment weight

Enter the percentage that each assessment contributes to the course grade. For example, an exam worth 30% of the course should have a weight of 30%.

4. Add additional assessments

Use the Add Assessment button to include more assignments, quizzes, tests, or exams in the calculation.

5. Check your overall grade

The calculator automatically calculates the weighted average and displays your current overall grade as both a percentage and a letter grade.

Weighted Grade Calculation

The Grade Calculator uses a weighted average instead of treating every assessment equally.

The basic formula is:

Weighted Grade = Σ (Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ Weight

For example, consider these assessments:

  • Homework: 90% — 20% weight

  • Quiz: 80% — 30% weight

  • Exam: 95% — 50% weight

The calculation is:

(90 × 20 + 80 × 30 + 95 × 50) ÷ 100 = 89.5%

The resulting overall grade is 89.50%.

This method gives more influence to assessments that have a higher percentage of the total course grade.

Why Weighted Grades Matter

Different assessments usually have different levels of importance. A small homework assignment may contribute only 5% to a course grade, while a midterm or final exam could contribute 30% or more.

A simple average would give each grade equal importance. A weighted grade calculator accounts for the actual contribution of each assessment, providing a more accurate representation of overall academic performance.

Grade Scale

The following table shows a commonly used percentage-to-letter-grade scale along with the corresponding grade point:

Percentage RangeLetter GradeGrade Point
97% – 100%A+4.0
93% – 96%A4.0
90% – 92%A−3.7
87% – 89%B+3.3

80% – 82%B−2.7
77% – 79%C+2.3

70% – 72%C−1.7
67% – 69%D+1.3
60% – 66%D1.0

Note: Grade scales and grade points can vary between schools, colleges, universities, and countries. The table above represents a commonly used grading scale. Always check your institution’s official grading policy when a different scale is used.

Calculating a Current Grade

The calculator can also be used during the semester to track current academic performance. Simply enter the assessments that have already been graded along with their corresponding weights.

For example, if completed assessments represent 60% of a course, the calculator can determine the weighted average for those entered assessments. Future assignments and exams can then be added as new grades become available.

Total Assessment Weight

The Total Weight Entered shows the combined weight of all assessments included in the calculation.

For example:

  • Assignment: 10%

  • Quiz: 10%

  • Midterm: 20%

The total entered weight is 40%.

For a complete final course calculation, the weights of all assessments should normally add up to 100%. When calculating a current grade, however, it is normal for only a portion of the total course weight to have been completed.

Grade Calculator for Students

The Grade Calculator is useful for high school, college, and university students who need a quick way to track academic performance. It can be used for a wide range of subjects, including mathematics, science, English, history, business, computer science, and other courses that use weighted grading.

It can also help students understand which assignments have the greatest effect on their overall grade and keep track of their progress throughout the academic term.

Calculate Your Grade Easily

The Grade Calculator provides a quick and convenient way to calculate weighted grades. Enter your assessments, grades, and weights, and the calculator will automatically determine your overall percentage and corresponding letter grade.

Using a weighted grade calculator saves time, reduces manual calculation errors, and makes it easier to monitor academic progress throughout the semester.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is a grade calculator?

A grade calculator is an online tool that helps students calculate their overall or current grade based on individual assessment scores and their weights. Instead of calculating a weighted average manually, students can enter their grades for assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, and exams to quickly see their percentage and corresponding letter grade.

2. How does a weighted grade calculator calculate the overall grade?

A weighted grade calculator considers both the score and the percentage weight of each assessment. Each grade is multiplied by its assigned weight, and the results are combined to determine the weighted average. Assessments with higher weights have a greater impact on the overall grade than assessments with lower weights.

3. Can I use the grade calculator for my current course grade?

Yes. The calculator can be used throughout the semester to estimate your current grade using assessments that have already been completed and graded. You can enter your completed assignments, quizzes, tests, or exams along with their respective weights to see how you are performing so far.

4. Do all assessment weights need to add up to 100%?

For a complete final course calculation, the assessment weights should generally add up to 100%. However, when calculating a current grade during the semester, the total weight may be less than 100% because some assignments or exams have not been completed yet. The calculator can still determine the weighted average of the grades you have entered.

5. Can a grade calculator convert a percentage into a letter grade?

Yes. The Grade Calculator can convert a percentage score into a corresponding letter grade using the grading scale provided with the calculator. For example, a score in the 90–92% range is generally represented as an A−, while 93–96% corresponds to an A. Grading systems can vary by institution, so students should check their school’s official grading policy for the most accurate scale.
